Batman Emblem 3 Different ways

2/14/2015

Everyone loves Batman, especially my kids. So i put together these little emblems for, um, the kids. Yea for the kids. As well as for a demo of the types of things we can make with  acrylic and our laser.

I started out by downloading a Batman emblem (JPG) from the web and importing it into Corel Draw, from there i quickly created 'curves' or traces of the emblem for use in creating the acrylic shapes.

Method One: Straight cut out form Yellow Acrylic. Using a vector outline of the emblem the laser cutout the shape in just 1:31. I have a black truck, this will look pretty sweet on there.

Method Two: Engrave the batman emblem into a yellow piece of acrylic. Using 40% power on the laser i get a relief of the emblem in the acryilic about 1/16" deep. The laser just sweeps back and forth and raster's the design. It then cuts out the oval shape surrounding the emblem. This took about 12 minutes of laser time. To finish this, before removing the masking i spray painted the engraved area, first with black enamel and then with clear coat.

Method Three: Cut out a batman emblem from a piece of yellow acrylic and then cut out the oval shape so we have a 'void' emblem. Then use the same dimension Batman emblem and cut it out of 1/4" black acrylic. The laser kerf is perfect for a nice tight fit.  I should note the yellow being used through out here is 3/16", 1/16" thinner than the black acrylic for a raised emblem. This emblem is also 'double sided' or reversible.  We then take the black and glue it into the yellow. This method used about 4 minutes of laser time.

The very cool results are pictured below.

3D Printed Topographical Maps

We had a very interesting customer request yesterday. Someone wanted to give a friend a 3D Printed topographic map of a state park. We have printed these for customers previously, but the .stl files (the digital life blood of a 3D Printer) was provided.
As a 3D print shop, we cant take the time to draw these by hand in a CAD tool and be cost effective. So i started the inevitable Google search and came across the awesome Terrain2STL project here
In this website you can zoom in on your favorite area of the world in a 3D map rendering, draw some bounds for the area of interest and let the website do its work, generating an STL file that you can take to your favorite 3D Print Shop  and have it 3D printed.
In this case we were playing with Bear Brook State Park. The 3D print will be a solid color and once complete it can be painted. For great finishing techniques (extremely thorough) for 3D prints check out this video

The website works great. The only thing I would like to see added right now is the ability to put down a number of geo points rather than be constrained to a square box. For an example like this, it would be fantastic to be able to outline the green boundaries of the park on the map.
